A Successful Career - Luck or ?????

I have met & seen some few peoples who are really successful in their career.

They have every thing in there life say it ( money, home, family, lifestyle ) infact every thing.

And I just said “You people are lucky “

But today, I realized that they are not lucky, they are people who know how to achieve success,
And in all, they believed and followed all the following key points in their life which my trainer told us to follow - in order to be a good Samaritan or say to have a bright career.

  • Do thing with out holding any expectations.
  • It’s the right time to learn …..learn …..learn.
  • Never look out for promotions or hike it will come on the right time when u deserve it.
  • Never let time be a constrain when any role or responsibility is been given.
  • Just learning is not important but implementing it in real life is important.
  • Speak what your heart believes in…… & not what your friends, family or society believes in.
  • Organization does not depend on a person but a person depends on an organization.
  • Gain the confidence of your seniors.
  • Use your spare time to read some good books.
  • Do not run behind money let money run behind you.
  • Never compromise on your believes or your values.

Free Software v/s Proprietary Software

This was one of my Best Paper Presentation.

Which I did last year, at Inter – Management competition held at PUMBA.

I think I was too young, to speak on this vast & controversial topic, but still I gave my best.

My paper was in favor of Free Software.

Yesterday when I just went through my paper, there were lot many thing which I did not agree today.

It happens many times – we hold an opinion about some thing at some time but as the time passes we change and our view points too, we do not agree to what we believed few days or years ago.

As a Student, I was right to promote Free Software. But as a Developer, if I keep my stand the same & if some one tells me to give away my source code free of cost, which I won’t ever, people will conclude “She does not believe in what ever she says”.

Free Software doest speak of price it is all about liberty.

It gives us freedom :

  • To run the software for any purpose.
  • To access the Source Code.
  • To Redistribute copies.
  • To improve and release your own version.

Richard Stallman was the founder of Free Software Foundation. My research work on Free Software landed me up reading articles on & by Stallman. He was so clear in his though & strong at the point that “Proprietary Software has no future

I was getting crazy about him. For 2 days I kept my topic aside and gathered details about him. Whom ever I met I just kept talking about his, and accidentally I did this with Abi my friend who studied at VIT Vellor. I felt J when he told me that he has met him when he had come down to his college for a seminar on Linux.

Lucky Guy!!!

Ok, lets not loose the track………we were on Free vs Proprietary Software.

Microsoft products is another name for Proprietary Software. Which has License & Renewal License , Product key ……..charged downloads etc……

Impact of Free over Proprietary:

  • Reduction in Number of clients.
  • Lack of motivation to the Programmers.
  • Software Society getting categorized.
If a day comes when a programmer cannot claim copyright on the software he has created and has to make it free, how many programmers will still put in 100%? Free software theory sounds more like communist ideas - everything for the society and nothing (or hardly anything) for your own benefit. Proprietary software sounds more like capitalism.

Even still as of now there are companies like SuSE, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, etc. who are financially doing good on free software, but is everything they dish out truly free? (Lets not try answering this one)There are no free lunches and there will never be.

I am not supporting or discouraging Open Source / Free Software. I think debating over this is point less. It differs from Organization to Organization, Programmer to programmer, Client to Client and finally depend on individuals as to what he or she wants to give back to the society.

What I have decided is to work as a commercial programmer but will also start contributing toward Open Source.

Warning: Please don’t take this post as Sun vs Microsoft or Stallman vs Bill Gates.

Experience at Marathon

"---------------------------------------------------------"

I tried it after Marathon run,

I tried it in the evening,

I tried it before my Dinner, I tried it on the dinning table,

I tried it on the bed, I tried it while I was driving to office……………

but failed to get the inaugural line for this post which will best explain my experience at Marathon.

5.30am - Got Up (thanks to my dad who waked me up).

6.30am - Got ready for Marathon with out having Breakfast which was substituted by a cup of Milk & Glucose biscuits.

Dad & Mom were much tensed as it was my first Marathon. They were departing me, the way a parent departs their child when he/she is going to school for the first time.

6.40am - After convincing my parents that I will be fine and wont take up any extra stress or injury, finally I left my home

7.10am - Reached Khanduji Baba Chowk Deccan (Staring point of marathon)

The Atmosphere was very different - saw the camera & the stage for the celebrities all set, participants with the Marathon TShirt , NCC Cadets well placed to organize things, manage the mob & police men’s there for security.

7.20am - Went to the Counter Collected Cap & Chest Number

7.35am - Joined the Charity Run.

7.40am - The inaugural session started.

The marathon was flagged off by Sunil Gavaskar.

Felicitation of all the Celebrities - Bollywood actress Aarti Chabbaria, Vidya Malvade and Sagarika Ghatge & actor Salman Khan, Suresh Kalmadi & Mayor of Pune .

8.15am - Salman Khan Flag off the AIDS charity run. I was in the first batch and got the opportunity to closely witness these celebrities waving their hands & supporting us.

8.45am - Reached Nehru Stadium (The Finishing point)

I was satisfied with my performance as I could finish 4.5 km in 30min.

Saw lots of participation from IT companies in and around Pune in Groups.

10.00am - Reached home

I had a great time running with 30000 athletes & people on the road watching us & appreciating & encouraging us.

Marathon is not over for me……………it will go on.

I aim to participate in the next marathon for Women’s 10 Km Run.I understand that Its not that easy but neither is it going to be impossible, as I am going to continue my practice & maintain a healthy diet.

What made me happier is that listening to my experience Mom & Dad have decided to join me in the next marathon.

2nd Dec 2007 A Challenging Day for me.

That’s a day when I will be running…………. I mean, I will be participating in

Pune’s 22nd International Marathon

Thanks to Sujata & Milind for inspiring me towards this.

Every Marathon the seen used to be like, I getting up at 9.00 am ( as it is on Sunday ) sitting in front of TV and watching people running and listening to some celebrity talk of - why running is good for health etc……And some awareness about AIDS.

But now as I have decide to participate for 22nd Pune International Marathon ( Run Against AIDS ) my preparations are in full swing:

  • Purchased the forms
  • Got it filled
  • Started running for 1 hour every morning
  • Following some healthy diet

Some thing which I need to do:

  • Purchase a new sports shoes
  • Running for 2 hrs daily
  • Get the Vodafone T Shirt .
  • Give this surprising news to my friends

Marathon brings with itself lots of excitement. Makes us aware about our health & diet. It make me believe that “Health is wealth”.

I am very excited about it – this is going to be a new experience for me. Running along with lots of people for a single cause.

Will get back ……..with a post about Marathon experiences.

Come Join me…………….at Marathon……………………

Forms are available at http://www.22ndpuneinternationalmarathon.com/

Hungarian Notation

When ever I am coding or say, ever since I am into Windows Programming there is one thing that is always back of my mind

“Follow the Hungarian Notation”

I being a Java Programmer never followed Hungarian Notation but yes, tried my best to giving some Sensible names to my variables

Let me have a look at the my

Variable Naming Life Cycle

Role :Student

Variable Names : a, x, y, z

Reason : To be the first one to submit the online assignment

Result: Full marks & Teachers Impressed

Role : Java Programmer

Variable Names : var, count, vectSize, str, con, rs

Reason : I used to Understand that much better , saved time and my Application running on web

Result: Warnings but Happy ( completed my task before time )

Role: Windows Programmer

Variable Names : all sorts of veered names

Reason : I was confused others too

Result: Penalties…………….and Sweet Warnings before I start a new module

I remember Hungarian Notation being a chapter in my C Programming but never took it seriously.
started taking it seriously after my training session on Hungarian Notation.

Bookish Definition:

Naming Convention in which the name of a variable indicates its Datatype.

Self Definition:

Reminding a forgetful programmer that he cannot store a float value in an integer declared variable.

Was invented by Charles Simonyi Chief Architect at Microsoft.

In spite of its Advantages like:

  • The variable type can be seen from its name
  • Easy to remember…………..blablabla

For me :

  • It has brought in more Discipline in my Coding Styles
  • Makes my Program more Readable to Others who follow it
  • I walk through my code not to check its functionality but to see if I have followed the Hungarian Notation.

Moral of the Story - Chak De India

Me writing about a movie is a big surprise to people who know me

But the fact is yes, I am seriously gona right about Chak De India .I am not at all a File Savvy but it was my sister who insisted me to watch Chak De India as this movie is very close to her (she is a too a hockey Player).

After the end of the movie I had lots to say which I though of putting it on my blog

I really enjoyed the whole movie - the story was straightforward, characters full of personality, there was humor, defeat, victory and the game of hockey!

There are number of thing which I have learned for this Movie:

  • There is a Pride in Winning but which is possible only when we back it up with hard work & Sacrifice
  • If you have the talent, passion and commitment, you can make underdogs win
  • When you are working in a team - know the team members individual strengths and weaknesses
  • There is no alternate to hard work, not even smart work!
  • Have humility and always first think of the Nation
  • We have to identify our self as Indians first
  • Follow your heart! And never give up

Well I have not learnt or Known all this after watching Chak De ………………]

In fact we were taught all this by our Parents, School & College Teachers & our Gurus.

….

……………….

But then I realize that we are forgetting to implement all these lessons when we start dealing with peoples in Real life.

Its time for Human Beings to Wait and Think for a while and get an answer to this Question:-

Where are we leading too?

Google Bug

There is no day where i haven't visit Google com.

It is the most trusted Site

When ever any one is in need of any information we tell him to go to Google.

The most popular Search engine

But For my surprise there is a bug which I found today when I looked out for

Some assertion example in java.

I landed up to the last page…………………….and to my surprise the last page was the 79th page which I predicted would be 1,40,000th page

Know how did I calculated 1,40,000th page???????????????

When I types out the search content it said that it has 1,400,000 results

Google displays 10 results in a page

So to display 1,400,000 results it must display ( 1,400,000/10 ) pages

.

If 79th is the last page then where are the remaining results.

I didn't get this funda

But I am help less ……………….I still have to depend on google even if it doesn't displays me the entire results.

Palm Craze

Well Changes are always good – I got this greatest opportunity to work on a project for palm computers. Before I come up with a new post where I will be noting down the requirements of my project lets take a preface about Palm Computers.

I can say many people don't know exactly what the Palm Craze is. They think of the first generation of handheld devices -- that old address book and schedule. They were tiny and expensive. Palm Craze is in full swing because the devices out there now will enable a person to have all of her addresses, appointments, email, word processing documents, spreadsheets, databases, and genealogy conclusions in something that will fit into a pocket.

They run on 2 basic operating system: Windows CE, Palm OS.
They are again 2 basic manufacturersThe Palm Pilots from Palm, the Visors from Handspring.
Palm presently makes three models: the III, V, and VII. Everyone I've met likes her own model the best, so there's something to say for them all. They come with varying amounts of memory.
IBM recently announced a hard drive holding a gigabyte that will fit into a palm. A gigabyte, contrary to anything you may have heard, is really big.
Sony will be making a Palm device soon,

Let's face it, people shouldn't get these things for the fun of it. They should offer some functionality that helps them do something better, cheaper, and faster. Life is a constant set of experiments to find better ways to deal with the same challenges, over and over. The Palm Craze is just a normal manifestation of several million people looking for a better way to keep track of things that they can't remember, and to connect with others.

Well so far I am not a Palm Craz…………..but I guess the day I start programming for WinMO I will one among them.
My First week in my new Office has made me realize that there’s lot to me learnt & done in life. Its only we who restrict our self. Every Day I am learning some thing new. Before I go to bed I just ask my self what I have learnt today – and it’s only when I get an answer I get a nice complete sleep.
